Message :It is very stong with a proper matrix resin... its bad rep comes from its common use with polyester. In fact, it has near the same performance as carbon, but with none of the weight savings. (often a greater impact resistance as well)
actually, a significant weight savings is in the resin itself. Can you even find Pre-Preg Fiberglass? With a prepreg Carbon, the resin quantity is very tightly controlled, to the point of really making an impact on weight.
I agree, fiberglass is generally underated.

:Glass structure with a kevlar scrim would be nice...
:Cost and difficulty would be far higher than equivalent cast pieces... the likely show stoppers.
Non-Military grade Kevlar is not terribly expensive. There are some other materials I've considered. I promise my first few will be of a fiberglass of sometime for proof of concept.

But as you state, Vacuum and Pressure will "work" the material the hardest, so my design is more critical then the materials I use.
